Christmas, New Year's Eve and Ukrainian Christmas

We had planned to spend Christmas day at my parents' house but the weather had other plans for us this year. The snow started falling on Christmas Eve and with the truck in need of breaks and the car without snow tires and sporting that winter friendly rear wheel drive we decided to heed the advice of the travel advisories and stay off the road. So Greg, Andrea and I had a very low key Christmas Day at home with the animals. Brooklyn was so excited with all the new dog toys that she had them all shredded in about 30 minutes. This left Darby and Thoven wondering what all the fuss about Christmas was about as they had nothing to play with all day. Me, on the other hand was very happy spending the snow day learning how to play my wii New Super Mario Bros. game! What fun!!! If only I could get a family member to play with me... Andrea was busy hanging out in her footie pajamas and playing with her new laptop while Greg was reading through his new cookbooks.

Two days after Christmas we had a "redo" at my parents' house. My brother and his family weren't able to stay in town long enough to do a repeat of Christmas but my sister's kids (except for the newly working Amber) were able to join us. I had no idea that the hit of the day would be my wii New Super Mario Bros game. We had four controllers ready in no time and the wild fun began!!! It became obvious early on that Miranda and Robert have some serious gaming skills and I was way out of my league trying to play with them, but I'll do my best to improve before the next get together!!!On New Year's Eve Andrea tried to make her annual batch of sushi and the rice we made in Greg's new rice maker was a bit too light and fluffy and never did stick well enough to make sushi. Thank goodness we had a back-up plan for spring rolls. Andrea had a friend staying with us and the two of them stayed up until midnight and came around the house kissing each of the dogs on the top of their head. I was up diligently working on my Super Mario Bros skills in hopes of someday keeping up with Miranda and Robert.

New Year's Day was our Ukrainian Christmas celebration with Greg's family. He had been busy cooking for the better part of the week. I didn't take any photos but here are a few images I found online that give an idea of a few things we always have for the meal.

We always have such a full house for this celebration and Sarah coordinates Christmas carols with instrumental accompaniment provided by the family. Of course Greg's family isn't above a little wii entertainment and Nick had additional controllers in the car so there was another round of Super Mario Bros that left me in the dust early on. I have so much to learn but vow to keep plugging away!!! Oh, just thought I should let the family know that I now have all the coins for the first level!!!! Woohoo!!! I had to learn to wall jump to do that, I hope you know! I warped ahead to level 5 through a shortcut and realize that I'll need to learn how to swing on vines as well. It's going to take a lot of work, but I'm willing to put in the time - lol!!!!!!!!
