Thursday Restaurant Review - The Blue Door

Greg is the one who follows the comings and goings of local chefs and eating/drinking establishments. It is his passion! So when I hear of a place that he may not have heard of yet I feel like a kid keeping a secret present that I'm dying to tell about but even more excited to keep secret. I had heard that a new pub was opening in St. Paul and I was pretty confident Greg hadn't heard about it since there was very little news of it prior to the opening so for almost two weeks I have been keeping my little secret as to where I was taking Greg to dinner this week. He met me at work without knowing where we were going and when I found it and said there it is, the Blue Door I was giddy when he was totally surprised that a restaurant even existed in that spot. The Blue Door had been open a mere five days and we were already there to give it a try! Fun!!!!!We grabbed a cute little window seat where we could watch the city go by. Our servers were incredibly friendly and it was only moments before we each had a cold Surly in front of us. (We do what we can to support local brewers - lol) One food Minnesota is proud to call its own is the Juicy Lucy burger, which is a burger with the cheese cooked inside. The Blue Door had seven unique "Blucy" burgers in addition to the classic cheddar cheese filled "Lucy" burger. I knew I would be trying the Classic but my eye did wander over to the Bierock on the next page of the menu mostly because Reen makes them and shares photos of her results so often. Greg ordered the Bierock and Beer-Battered Green Beans but unfortunately word came back from the kitchen that they were out of Bierocks for the day! Bummer!!! Greg happily settled for the Blucy, which is an angus burger stuffed with bleu cheese and garlic. We both had the hand cut fries, which we agreed they would need to work on. As a final note, the pub is small and has the potential of getting quite loud so I'd say go during a non peek time.
